What
should I expect if I visit the Douglass Hills church of Christ?
Many people hesitate to visit a church unless they know what it will be
like when they go there. We want to assure you that as a visitor at the Douglass
Hills church of Christ, you will never be embarrassed.
We earnestly strive to restore New Testament Christianity as it was practiced
in the first century. A common ingredient in our services is worship that focuses
on pleasing. Our intent is to do His will as instructed by His word, the Bible.
We assembly twice on Sunday to worship God. We gather each Sunday morning at
9 a.m. and then again Sunday evening at 6 p.m. All of our assembled worship services
are sincere and devout. They are keynoted by the words of Jesus, “True
worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24).
Our services consist only of those acts that were part of the worship of the
early church.
The entire assembly joins in worshipping God and admonishing each other by singing
hymns and spiritual songs in the manner prescribed by the New Testament (Ephesians
5:19; Colossians 3:16). We encourage everyone to sing and give praise to God
with his or her voice.
We hear a lesson from God’s word every assembly, or we learn about the
work of the congregation. The preaching in our services is plain, simple and,
most importantly, Biblical. The theories and doctrines of men are not taught.
People are urged to believe and obey the Gospel of Christ as it is revealed in
the New Testament.
The assembly is led in pray to God by several of the men at different times.
We pray to praise and thank God and to ask Him for our needs and those of others
(1 Timothy 2:1-4).
We also remember the sacrificial death, burial and resurrection of Jesus through
taking the Lord's supper(1 Corinthians 11:20-36). We do this every Sunday (Acts
20:7).
The first of each week, when we gather, a collection is taken from the membership
and placed in the common treasury to support the work of the local church. We
make no pleas for money from our visitors and we offer no embarrassing propositions
designed to apply pressure. It is the responsibility of our members to give freely
and willingly as they have been prospered (1 Corinthians 16:1-2; 2 Corinthians
9:7-15).
At the Douglass Hills church, we have no man-made doctrines or creeds. Our authority
is the divinely inspired word of God. We are simply Christians (Acts 11:27).
We believe that friendliness is a natural attitude among people who truly love
God (John 13:34-35). Our visitors always receive a warm reception. We truly hope
you will accept our invitation to visit with us.
