Calvary
Calvary or Golgotha meaning The Place of a Skull. The name was due, either to a rounded rock like a skull, or to the fact that it was a place of execution and that skulls were lying there. The locality is not certainly known.
It was some well - known spot outside the gate Hebrews 13:12
It was near the city John 19:20
It had a "garden" which contained the tomb where Jesus was laid John 19:41
John 19:17-20
And He, bearing His cross, went out to a place called the Place of a Skull,
which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, where they crucified Him, and two
others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center. Now
Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. And the writing was: JESUS
OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. Then many of the Jews read this
title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it
was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.
"This thing was not done in a corner." It was in a very public place, witnessed by many Jews.
Acts 13:29ff Paul speaking in Antioch
Now when they had fulfilled all that was written concerning Him, they took
Him down from the tree and laid Him in a tomb. But God raised Him
from the dead. He was seen for many days by those who came up with
Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are His witnesses to the people. And
we declare to you glad tidings--that promise which was made to the fathers. God
has fulfilled this for us their children, in that He has raised up Jesus.
Many people witnessed the crucifixion of Jesus outside the city walls.
Acts 13:31, Acts 2:32 His resurrection was witnessed by many people. This is what was preached by the Christians of the 1st century and by us today.
1Cor 2:2 For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.
This is what gives us hope today. Jesus came to earth, gave Himself on Calvary us and rose again on the third day. And we have the eyewitness testimony of the very men who knew him best.
Ephesians 2:12-13
That ye were at that time separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth
of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of the promise, having no hope
and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus ye that once
were far off are made nigh in the blood of Christ.
1Peter 1:3
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to
His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection
of Jesus Christ from the dead.
