When is it a Church of Christ?

Many people think the "church of Christ" is merely "another denomination."  However, the expression, as used in the New Testament, simply refers to a church which is "of" [or belonging to] Christ.   Consider the following chart for some differences between a church [congregation] which is "of Christ" and a church [denomination] which is "of man."

It is "of Christ" when: It is "of man" when:
  • It was planned by God.
  • Christ is its only head.
  • It accepts only Christ's authority.
  • Its organization is scriptural.
  • It only wears bible names.
  • It engages in pure worship.
  • It follows a divine mission.
  • God set entrance requirements.
  • It was planned by man.
  • It has human heads.
  • It has a human legislative body.
  • It has a human organization.
  • It wears unauthorized names.
