How Can You Say You Love People When You Send Them to Hell?

Introduction:

As we continue our series of lessons dealing with questions that we would like to ask God, we need to be reminded of some important preliminary considerations.  Remember that: 1) We can't answer every question that might come up, but; 2) we do have all the necessary information that we need to live this life and gain heaven as our eternal home, and; 3) the place to look for this information is in the Bible, for in contains all truth (John 16:12,13).

The question for this study is: God, how can You say You love people when You send them to hell?

I) The doctrine of hell is NOT popular in the religious world, yet it is plainly taught in the Bible

    A) Matthew 25:41,46
     B) 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9
II) Notice these descriptions of Hell:

    A) Everlasting fire (Rev. 20:14; Matt. 13:42; Mark 9:43,44)
     B) Outer darkness (Matt. 8:11,12; 22:13)
     C) Eternal death (Rev. 2:11; 20:6,14)
     D) The emphasis is on separation from God  - Hell is REAL!
III) Our dilemma:

    A) God is love
          1) 1 John 4:8
          2) Romans 5:8
          3) 2 Peter 3:9
          4) 1 Timothy 2:4
     B) God is holy and just, and cannot tolerate wickedness
          1) Habakuk 1:13
          2) Psalms 5:4
          3) Deuteronomy 32:4
          4) Genesis 18:25
          5) Hebrews 12:29
     C) How do we reconcile "the goodness and severity of God" (Rom. 11:22)?
          1) Through the cross of Jesus
          2) John 3:16
Conclusion:  We have a choice

    A) While God's justice demands a punishment for sin, His love and grace have supplied a substitute to take our place
     B) Now, the choice is ours
     C) Deut. 30:19, Josh. 24:15, Isa. 65:12, Rom. 6:17
